Trauma Therapy
Trauma-informed therapy
Trauma can leave you feeling stuck in survival mode, disconnected from yourself, or unsure why old experiences still feel so present. Trauma therapy with Kaelynn Buchanan at KAE Days Counseling is designed to help you feel understood, supported, and more equipped to move forward at a pace that feels safe.
Check AvailabilityWhat Is Trauma?
Trauma is not only about what happened to you. It is also about how your mind, body, and nervous system had to respond in order to get through it. Some trauma comes from a single painful event, while other trauma builds over time through chronic stress, unsafe relationships, childhood experiences, grief, betrayal, abuse, neglect, or repeated moments of feeling powerless or alone.
People often expect trauma to look obvious, but it can show up in subtle ways. You may notice anxiety, emotional numbness, people-pleasing, anger, shame, nightmares, flashbacks, trouble trusting others, relationship struggles, dissociation, avoidance, or feeling like your body is always on alert. Trauma therapy helps you understand these responses with compassion instead of judgment.
The Kind of Trauma Work Kae Does
Kaelynn works from a trauma-informed lens, which means therapy is not about forcing you to relive painful memories before you are ready. The work begins with creating a space where you can feel heard, validated, and supported. From there, therapy may include building coping skills, understanding patterns, strengthening emotional regulation, and gently processing the experiences that continue to affect your life. You can also learn more about Kaelynn and her therapy approach.
Her approach can include EMDR therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mindfulness techniques, and whole-person support. This allows treatment to be tailored to the person in front of her rather than using a one-size-fits-all model. Some clients need help calming the nervous system first. Others are ready to process memories, rebuild trust, or work through how trauma affects relationships, identity, faith, boundaries, and daily life.
What to Expect in Trauma Therapy
1. Safety and trust come first
You do not have to share everything at once. The first part of therapy often focuses on getting to know you, understanding what brings you in, and identifying what helps you feel grounded and safe enough to do meaningful work.
2. Your symptoms start to make sense
Trauma symptoms can feel confusing or frustrating. Therapy can help you see those symptoms as protective responses that developed for a reason, then begin building new ways to respond in the present.
3. Processing happens at your pace
When you are ready, treatment may involve processing difficult memories, emotions, body sensations, beliefs, and relationship patterns. EMDR may be used when appropriate to help the brain reprocess painful experiences in a more adaptive way.
4. Healing becomes practical
The goal is not only to talk about the past. It is also to help you feel more present in your life, communicate more clearly, set healthier boundaries, reconnect with yourself, and experience more freedom from old survival patterns.
